Story – Monty Spindler and the truc 12 sails development
Monty Spindler is a true legend of windsurfing and one of the most influentialsail-makers in the history of the sport.
Founder of Loft Sails and a lifelong innovator, he started building sails in his home garage, turning experimentation into a profession and a reputation that would shape the sport for decades. Monty’s strength has always been practical craftsmanship: understanding loads, materials, and wind behavior with accuracy, and translating that knowledge into sails that simply work, and mostly win!
“The wind is just telling me; it’s writing its book on the surface of the water. So, I want to get out there and read.”
Monty started sailing as a child: he first moved on the lakes around Detroit, and by the age of 13 he had relocated to Annapolis, where he practiced sailing. But his true and lasting passion quikly became windsurfing.
Monty began making windsurf sails and equipment at home, using a sewing machine, building gear for himself and a few friends. Some of the sails he designed went on to set world speed records, and even today his designs consistently take top positions in major competitions.
Despite his long career and the scale of the windsurfing industry, Spindler has always favored a hands-on, craft-driven approach. Even today, he personally oversees the creation of every prototype.
Monty accepted immediately. The idea of blending the needs of dinghy sails with the power and evolution of windsurf rigs intrigued him from the start. The goal was ambitious:
create a sail that is easy to rig, powerful on downwind angles thanks to its generous surface, yet perfectly manageable upwind.
So began a long, meticulous development. Prototypes with and without cambers. Different materials, battens, leech tensions. Tests across Tarifa and Geneva, with constant refinement and feedback.
Twelve months later, the work came together.
A range of sails that carry Monty’s unmistakable signature —fast, balanced, beautifully crafted. Sails that give the Truc 12 a new voice, new power, and new precision on the water. But above all, this collaboration became a remarkable human encounter: people from different worlds, united by curiosity, passion, and the desire to create something truly original.
Thank you, Monty.
